FAQs

What are the benefits of driving an electric car?

Given that they are fully electric, these cars produce absolutely zero exhaust emissions that can be harmful to the environment. Electric cars pave the way for a greener future, and they are something that we should all consider to help tackle climate change. Since electric cars run on highly efficient batteries, noise pollution in the city can be significantly reduced as well. The driving experience will be nothing but comfortable and relaxing.

Furthermore, it is possible that investing on an electric car now can cost you less in the long run. Petrol prices can increase, while charging a battery can be quickly done at the comfort of your home. Electric consumption per kilometer is also considerably smaller than petrol consumption, which means that you can save better for long journeys. Don’t worry, Singapore now offers 1,600 charging stations islandwide for these type of cars, so you will definitely not run out of power while on the go.

As of now, Shell is charging at $0.55 per kwH, so expect around $33 for a full charge. Other companies to consider for charging are the SP Group, BlueSG ($1/hr for the first 3 hours,  subsquently $2/hr), Greenlots (starts at $0.55 per kWh, differs at every site).

Maintenance fees tend to be a whole lot cheaper, too, since there are fewer car parts that are susceptible to damage.

What do you need to know before buying an electric car?

Contrary to what you may know, electric cars these days are much more accessible than before. There’s an electric car to suit almost every budget, and you can get a loan (from the dealer or bank) just like for any other car purchase. Other than the cost of the actual vehicle, you should also factor in the other expenses need for a car, although they are pretty much the same for a petrol car. For instance, you need to consider car insurance, road tax, and Certificate of Entitlement (COE), plus other taxes. Check out this link if you want to know more about the costs of owning a car in Singapore.

What rebates are available in Singapore for electric cars?

Since Singapore now promotes the use of electric cars, the government has recently introduced rebates schemes to make them more appealing despite the high price point. For starters, those who purchase fully electric cars can claim up to 45% rebate on the Additional Registration Fee (ARF), capped at $20,000. Also known as the EV Early Adoption Incentive (EEAI), this promo is applicable from now until December 2023. Starting from January 2022, the ARF will be cut down to $0 from the current minimum of $5000. Same with the EEAl, this rebate scheme will also run until December 2023, so make sure that you have already purchased your electric car by then.

Additionally, you can also claim your rebates through the Vehicle mission Scheme (VES). This scheme allows you to get around $15,000 to $25,000 for new electric cars, which differs on the vehicle manufacturer and model.

In short, should you buy an electric car in Singapore?

If you have the means to do so, you should definitely consider buying an electric car in Singapore. Especially now that the government is providing rebates to make your purchase more fulfilling. Other than taking a step toward a greener future, using an electric car is also safer for you and your family. And who knows, maybe the roads will only consist of fully electric cars in the next few years or so.

Where to buy an electric car in Singapore?

You can get your electric car from the official websites of the car brands that we’ve mentioned. They are also best if you want to learn more about the features of the car you’re eyeing.  However, online car marketplaces are the way to go for ultimate convenience.
