Where to Buy Furniture & Lights in Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Many Singaporeans cross the border to Johor Bahru for cheaper groceries, so why not furniture too? When shopping for furniture for our new home, many of our friends suggested for us to head across the causeway to Johor Bahru to buy furniture. We took a day-trip up to explore the JB furniture stores. Though eventually, we didn’t get our furniture from JB, it gave us a good idea of the other options available. I’ve compiled the list of JB furniture stores for you to check out for yourselves. I’ve sorted it by area and mapped it out below so it’s easier for you to hop from one furniture store to the next.

Taman Pelangi (10min from causeway)
DJ&CO Lifestyle by Mocof Johor
This was the first JB furniture shop we visited. It’s very near to the causeway, just a 10-minute drive. The store is pretty cosy like that of a cafe. We found this store because it carries Spaze, a collection of space saving furniture that is well designed and very functional. The price point, though a little steep, made sense because it isn’t easy to find stylish space saving furniture in Singapore. Also, when comparing the prices to space-saving furniture in Singapore, was definitely cheaper.

Taman Molek (20 min from causeway)
Boo Furniture
Boo Furniture is a JB furniture store that sells mainly solid wood furniture – the type with a Balinese vibe. Their wood is from Indonesia and is said to be the premium grade quality of teak wood. Their furniture design is suitable for Scandinavian or vintage home themes. I didn’t visit their branch but found mentions of them online. I think you will be able to find some unique designs here. They have 2 branches, one at Taman Molek and the other at Taman Pelangi.

Their furniture is made with eco-friendly materials, and their design philosophy is modern and fresh. They have 2 branches, one at Taman Molek, and the other at Danga Utama. They have pretty good reviews online though prices are higher.

Ikea Tebrau, opened its doors in 2017 right opposite AEON Mall and is a whopping 46,713 sq meters of land. Though the product range does not differ drastically, prices are said to be more affordable than the Singapore IKEA. Cross-border delivery is not available yet though, but if you drive down you will be able to lug some of the smaller items back home.

How to finance your home?
Depending on the brands you purchase, the average cost of renovating your home is $50,000 – $60,000. Furniture and appliances like lights will probably set you back an extra $10,000 – $15,000. If you need to take up a loan to finance your purchase, renovation loans often do not give you the cash upfront, hence you may not be able to use it for tiles shopping, depending on whether your interior designer includes it in their quotation. If so, you might wish to consider a personal loan instead. Do note that personal loans have slightly higher interest rates than renovation loans, but you get the cash flexibility. Our friends at Singsaver have compiled the best personal loans for you to check out.

When shopping for your home, do keep in mind to prioritize and focus on the essentials first. Leave the ‘nice-to-haves’ for later, for it’s best to not spend beyond your means. When buying your lights, we also suggest using credit cards that give you rebates, so you get extra savings. Every little bit of savings can go a long way!
