Baby cots with a drop-side mechanism

This is something important to note when you buy a baby cot. There are some baby cots in Singapore that feature a drop-side mechanism, which means that you can put down one side of the baby crib. This is a useful feature as it allows you to easily access your baby, and you can interact with your baby without having to bend down over the high rails. It also makes diaper changes very easy.

However, if you are planning to buy a baby cot with a drop-side mechanism, it is important to make sure that the manufacturer has designed and made it properly. Also, double-check to make sure that there has not been any product recalls for that model, as some models were not properly made and posed safety issues in the USA. If you prefer to err on the safe side, you can opt for “a traditional crib with a firm mattress, with no drop sides or wide gaps between slats” (source).

That said, we understand that well-made drop-side cribs can be safe and useful. Personally, we went for a drop-side crib (Bonbijou Atlast 5-in-1 cot) because we were planning to do diaper changes in the cot itself, as our nursery had no space for a dedicated diaper changing station. We made sure to view and test the product to ensure that it is manufactured well and that the latch is secure. The pull-down for the drop-side crib is also manual and cannot be activated by the baby.

Tips on buying a baby cot in Singapore

If you’re going to be using a cot for your little one, it will most probably be his/her bed till he/she turns two or three years old. Here are the points you need to remember while buying a baby cot:

• You will want to buy a strong, sturdy, and safe baby cot. Buy a baby cot that does not have any sharp edges so it does not pose a risk to your baby 
• Look for a crib with an adjustable base, this will allow you to adjust the mattress height as your baby grows, and prevent him/her from being able to crawl out. The crib’s rail should be 26 inches above the mattress.  It should have an adjustable base height to ensure your baby’s safety
• Crib slats or bars should not be too wide (You should not be able to fit a soda can through them)
• Make sure that the crib is made with non-toxic materials. It should have non-toxic teething rails so that your baby doesn’t chew on the wood
• Ensure that the crib does not wobble when you shake it. It should be lightweight so that it can be moved from one room to the other
• If the crib is on wheels, ensure that it can be firmly locked. It should have wheels at the bottom
• Do not place your baby in a sarong or cradle for sleep as it does not provide support for their head. 
• Avoid buying a second-hand crib or bassinet unless it is from a family or friend. There is a risk the equipment could be outdated or broken or improperly repaired. 

Cot vs bassinet

A baby cot, also known as a baby crib, is a small infant bed that is barred with slats (usually wooden) at the four sides, to keep your baby from falling or getting out. The benefit of a baby cot is that it is sturdy, safe, and comes with a firm mattress. Some baby cots like the OSUKI Cradle Baby Cot come with a rocking function too. 

Your baby can use a baby cot until he or she is 3 years old, before switching to a toddler bed. Some convertible baby cots in Singapore like the Italbaby Gina Baby Cot can be used up to 7 years old! 

A bassinet, on the other hand, is a cradle type of bed. It is designed to provide a rocking or gliding motion. It can provide safe sleep for newborns up to 3 or 4 months. The benefit of a bassinet is that it is smaller and portable. 

However, a bassinet is only suitable for babies that cannot yet roll, move or sit up. You will not want your baby rolling or bumping into the sides of the bassinet and wake up crying. If you choose to start off with a bassinet, transition him or her into a crib between 3 to 6 months. A crib would also be a safer permanent sleeping place for your baby as it is “gated”.

Crib vs playpen

A baby playpen or play yard is meant as a space for playtime. While some parents double it up as a crib, I would not suggest using it as a permanent sleeping option, as a playpen is usually made of softer components and may not offer enough support for your baby. Structurally, it is also weaker and may top over without supervision. But thanks to its portability, it can double up as a baby cot when you are travelling.
