How does a pressure cooker work?
A pressure cooker raises the boiling point of water and traps the steam inside under high pressure, decreasing cook time required by up to 70%. The high pressure also helps to force liquid and moisture into your food, making it not only cook faster but also making it very tender and even caramelised.
What can you cook with a pressure cooker?
You can cook almost anything with a pressure cooker. My favourite is using it for soups as no longer do I need to simmer a pot over the stove for hours. The best part of a pressure cooker is you can just cook it and leave it. You do not have to watch over it like a hawk. You do not need to stir it in fear of the ingredients getting burnt, or worry that the water runs out. Your soup also does not boil away, and all the nutrients will be left inside. It effectively tenderizes your meat and retains all the nutrients and aroma as well, giving you a delicious and nutritious meal. Clean up is also very easy. Check out these pressure cooker recipes to get started.
Tips for buying a pressure cooker
Electric vs stovetop pressure cooker?
A stovetop pressure cooker works similarly to an electric pressure cooker but over the stove and uses gas instead of electricity. It does decrease the cooking time required, as compared to cooking with a regular pot. I know some prefer using a stovetop model because you can manually release the pressure and regulate temperature. They also take up lesser space compared to an electric cooker.
That said, I still prefer using an electric model because it is more convenient. You can “cook it and leave it” without much worry. After cooking, it also has a keep-warm function. Electric pressure cookers also come with more settings, allowing you to cook a wider variety of dishes. It can double up as a rice cooker, and the modern multi-cookers of today like the Philips Multicooker HD2145/62 can sear or saute, and even thicken sauces. Electric pressure cookers are energy efficient and can stand on its own.
Next is to choose the capacity of your cooker. This depends on how many you will be cooking for. Most pressure cookers in Singapore come in a standard size of 5 to 6 litres, which allows you to cook for an average family of 3 to 5 persons. If you are only looking to cook for yourself, you can consider getting a smaller sized one such as the Mayer 1.6 Litre Mini MMPC1650.
Where to buy a pressure cooker in Singapore?
You used to only be able to buy a pressure cooker in Singapore from stores, but now you can purchase them online for the ultimate convenience and even enjoy discounted prices! Shopee and Lazada are my go-to for shopping electronics and appliances. It is also a great place to compare the prices of pressure cookers in Singapore.
