Canggu Bali lies behind the busy cities of Kuta and Seminyak; the hipster haven that ignites creative expression and carefree demeanour. This quaint little town is a former fishing village that is now popular among surfers, young travellers, and digital nomads. It also offers picturesque views and invigorating ambience perfect for light and rejuvenating yoga sessions or just a laid-back honeymoon stay. Canggu is buzzing with Balinese culture and art that will enchant you all throughout your venture. In this issue, we present to you the 7 best things to do in Canggu Bali that will keep your heart and soul flutter with love and curiosity.
Where to Stay in Canggu Bali
Hotel Tugu Bali is the epitome of light and carefree honeymoon stay – a breath of fresh air from all the modern hotels we usually stay at. From the traditional welcome upon arrival—you are given a traditional Balinese flower gift with fresh frangipani flowers—to the intricate Balinese art and carvings that adorn the hotel lobby. Housing the biggest collection of fine Indonesian art and cultural antiques in the country, the first hotel in Canggu offers you a peek of rich culture and history; it is an art and antique collector’s dream that will genuinely spark one’s passion and creativity. Hotel Tugu Bali is designed by the owner as a boutique museum hotel to give home to his antiques. It is also a way to exhibit the romantic stories and legends of ancient Indonesian kingdoms to the world.
Another thing we love about Hotel Tugu Bali is its prime location. Situated just right across the beach, we had the chance to enjoy the early mornings as we eat breakfast on the rooftop. It is the best time to admire the sea and be entertained by the surfers who ride the waves in perfect undulation. Fancy a morning meal beside the hotel pool? The hotel offers its guests the option to serve you breakfast anywhere on the property to start your day. From there, everything is a stone’s throw away as Hotel Tugu is right at the entrance of the main road where popular art shops and cafés are lined up. Enjoy the sight of the world-renowned Bali sunset from the comfort of your own suite as you relax and soak in a sunken beaten silver tub. Each suite in Hotel Tugu has an enclosed porch with wood-paneled windows looking out over palm trees to the crashing surf. The huge four-poster bed in our room made it very hard to leave, especially in the mornings!
What to Do in Canggu Bali
1. Attend yoga sessions every morning at The Practice
Dharma, which means purpose, is what The Practice focuses on. The sessions work on different techniques that build the kind of dedication, bravery, modesty, focus, and devotion we need to live up to this purpose – the reason for our existence. You can explore the science and art of the Traditional Tantric Hatha Yoga practice under the guidance of experienced teachers with a solid dedication to the custom. Check their yoga schedule and rates here.
2. Have a romantic and sumptuous Japanese dinner at Ji Restaurant Bali as you watch the sunset
Ji Restaurant Bali transports guests to mystical, ancient Japan and the East a thousand years ago – back to the time where food is prepared with the traditional Japanese cooking methods through a touch of worldwide flavours. The restaurant is a reconstructed temple with a terrace that offers a 180-degree view of the ocean. Photos from Ji Restaurant Bali
You should not miss the chance to taste the island’s favourite cocktails that can only be found in Ji Restaurant Bali, the smoking Coco Sexo which is inspired by the volcanoes of Indonesia. Also, the signature Tugu Gin & Tea made with premium gin infused with Javanese tea and other herbs is definitely a must-try.
3. Surf in style with brunch and ice-cold beers
At Hotel Tugu Bali, they treat their surfer guests with utmost luxury and comfort. After surfing, you can treat yourself at their spa to soothe your muscles. They also have ice-cold beers to spoil you with its sensational taste, perfect to have after the exhilarating ride on the waves. Surfing at Canggu Bali is so serene that you can feel light and at peace as you watch the sun dips down the horizon the same way the waves keep kissing the shore.
Our tip: Surf around 1:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m
4. Grab lunch at the grown-up’s playground in Canggu Bali – Old Man’s Bar
A little after sunset, you can witness a more lively party scene. Old Man’s Bar is not deemed as the “grown-ups playground” for no reason. Every Wednesday, they have a drinking game that you and your beau might want to try for a wilder fun night before you call it a day. The resto-bar is home for expats, locals, and travellers alike that crave some hipster and friendly hangout.
Old Man’s Bar is the “it” beachfront beer garden near the dark-sand beach of Batu Bolong – an ideal spot where surfers can drop by to eat before or after surfing. The place changes atmosphere and personality throughout the day, making it more versatile in catering to whichever set up you are looking for when eating out. During the day, you can enjoy their reasonable and delectable simple menu like fries, salad, and burgers.
