Hiliwatu, Bali Ubud, a Tribute Portfolio Resort: A Luxurious Sanctuary Where Nature and Culture Come Together
There is something about Ubud that naturally encourages you to unwind. Away from Bali’s lively beaches and bustling shopping districts, you are instead placed in the island’s cultural, artistic, and spiritual heart. It is also here, within the peaceful hillside village of Bresela, that Hiliwatu Bali Ubud, a Tribute Portfolio Resort, provides a new door to discover a gentler rhythm of life.
As one of Marriott Bonvoy’s newest resorts in Bali, Hiliwatu is more than a luxury retreat surrounded by nature. Inspired by the island’s rich heritage, the resort invites guests to reconnect with themselves through thoughtfully curated resort activities, warm hospitality, and meaningful moments of relaxation. Even its name tells a story, combining Hill and Watu, the Balinese word for stone, to reflect its deep connection with the surrounding landscape while celebrating the individuality that defines the Tribute Portfolio collection.
Our three-day stay undeniably became one of the most memorable highlights of our Bali journey. From heartfelt birthday surprises to immersive cultural experiences and outstanding dining, every moment felt intentionally crafted rather than simply offered. Read on to learn why Hiliwatu deserves a place on your Bali itinerary.
7 Reasons to Stay at Hiliwatu Bali Ubud
1. A beautiful welcome inspired by Balinese philosophy

Our first glimpse of Hiliwatu was its elegant open-air lobby overlooking lush greenery and rolling fields. It was indeed a peaceful introduction to what awaited throughout our stay.
As beautiful as the views of the rice terraces were, it was the thoughtful details that made an even stronger impression. Suspended above the lobby are elegant lotus-inspired chandeliers representing Rwa Bhineda, the Balinese philosophy that harmony is found through balance between opposing forces: light and darkness, movement and stillness. It’s a subtle design element, yet carefully reflects the Balinese artistry and the resort’s authenticity.

The special welcome ceremony also made us feel genuinely cared for from the very beginning, especially after coming from a long drive. The ritual includes the use of a metal singing bowl to center the mind and transition into the peaceful rhythm of the resort. We were also given a traditional three-colored woven bracelet symbolizing harmony and protection. To complete the warm welcome, we were served refreshing signature Balinese drinks while waiting for the check-in process to be completed.
2. A private villa that truly felt like home

Hiliwatu houses 38 intimate sanctuaries. Guests may choose from 24 suites, 12 one-bedroom villas, a three-bedroom family villa, and a four-bedroom estate villa. During our stay, the picturesque One-Bedroom Villa, felt more than an ordinary accommodation; it became our temporary home.
As we stepped inside, we were greeted by one of the sweetest surprises we have ever received at a resort. Since we were celebrating my birthday, the team had thoughtfully prepared a beautiful birthday greeting handwritten across the large wall mirror, accompanied by an elegant birthday dessert waiting on the dining table. It was such a simple gesture, yet one that instantly made us feel welcomed and celebrated.

The villa itself was equally impressive. It is a spacious 150 sqm sanctuary thoughtfully designed to blend contemporary comforts with Balinese craftsmanship. Natural wood and stone textures throughout the villa create a seamless connection with nature. Behind the cosy bed is a large sliding wooden door that leads to an expansive bathroom with a huge stone bathtub. There are also two separate indoor spaces: one housing the toilet, while the other features a walk-in shower, which we absolutely appreciated as it provided an extra sense of privacy.

While we adored the indoor area of our villa, the outdoor lounge and the heated private pool took a special place in our hearts. It was a bit chilly on the evening of our arrival as a short downpour occurred, but we were still able to enjoy a refreshing dip as if we were in a hot spring. Meanwhile, there was something incredibly calming about watching the warm sunlight slowly filter through the surrounding trees while enjoying a quiet swim early in the morning. Sometimes, the simplest moments like this become the ones you remember most.
3. Dining that celebrates both culture and flavour
Dining is a significant highlight of our stay, with every meal offering not only exceptional flavours but also a deeper appreciation for Indonesian culture.
An unforgettable cultural dinner at Tapis
On our first night, we experienced the resort’s signature Cultural Dinner, held at Tapis Restaurant. This relaxed all-day dining venue transforms into an elegant cultural stage, where traditional rituals and Balinese performances create an immersive dining experience.
There is a welcome ritual where diners will be given traditional garments: Selendang, a colorful fabric tied neatly around the waist, representing respect and modesty for ladies, while Udeng, a sacred folded cloth wrapped around the head as a crown for gentlemen. The ritual also includes a blessing with holy water and placing pieces of rice on your forehead. Once seated, another ritual follows called Mewacik. It is the Balinese Hand-Washing Ceremony where each guest will have a gentle purification gesture, honoring the island’s ritual of cleansing before a meal.

While waiting for the meals to be served, a brief live sambal-making demonstration was also presented to each guest’s table. Each ingredient was thoughtfully introduced before being freshly ground using a traditional stone mortar. What makes it even more special is not only that we were given the chance to experience doing it on our own, but also the kind permission to adjust the spice to a more suitable level for our palate.
In addition to the cultural and traditional aspects, Tapis is undoubtedly excellent when it comes to serving good food. Here, Indonesian heritage recipes are thoughtfully reimagined using locally sourced ingredients and contemporary techniques. Among our favourites were the bakmie goreng with lobster (wok-fried fresh noodles) and rendang iga sapi (beef short rib in rendang sauce), both amazingly executed with rich flavours and generous portions. Their cocktails were bold yet nicely complemented the savoury dishes we had.
Bountiful breakfasts and memorable celebrations
After a remarkable dinner experience, mornings at Hiliwatu were equally memorable. Breakfast is served à la carte, but rather than waiting with an empty table, guests are first presented with a basket of freshly baked pastries and bread alongside a colourful plate of seasonal tropical fruits. It is a thoughtful touch that immediately makes breakfast feel abundant even before the main dishes arrive. One of our favourites was the signature Hiliwatu Toast, beautifully topped with almonds and fresh strawberries.
We also celebrated my birthday with a lovely lunch at Tapis. Not only did the Iga Bakar Babi (grilled local pork ribs), Aneka Satae (mixed chicken, fish, and beef satay), and Rujak Jerungga (prawn salad) taste fantastic, but the cheesecake the team brought after singing a Happy Birthday song was also lovely. Hiliwatu and its people have a remarkable way of turning simple moments into lasting memories.
Light bites with beautiful pool views
Aside from Tapis, Hiliwatu also offers Nira Pool Bar. Overlooking the resort’s scenic main pool, this venue specialises in Mediterranean-inspired bites and handcrafted cocktails, making it the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon. A couple of hours after our arrival, we had the luxury of experiencing Mewedang, the resort’s afternoon tea. The curated selection of sweet and savoury treats is artfully assembled on a huge serving dish resembling the iconic rice terraces. Each delicacy paired delightfully with our aromatic and rich cups of coffee.
For lighter meals, Nira Pool Bar also does not disappoint. After spending the morning exploring nearby attractions, we returned to Hiliwatu just in time for a leisurely late lunch. We enjoyed fresh oysters, wagyu sliders, and calamari fritti while soaking in the peaceful surroundings. It was one of those afternoons where there was nowhere else we’d rather be.
4. Experiences that connect you with Balinese culture and traditions
What sets Hiliwatu apart is that many of its activities are designed not simply as entertainment, but as opportunities to experience Balinese culture and traditions in meaningful ways. The resort encourages guests to create and connect with the local community through hands-on experiences.
The Eco-Print Workshop was unlike anything we had tried before. Using flowers, leaves, and other natural materials collected from the surrounding landscape, we designed and created our own tote bags and coasters. Repetitive hammering does require some strength but seeing the intricate colours and patterns emerge from nature itself made the finished piece feel even more rewarding. It was incredibly special to bring home a personalised keepsake that we had created with our own hands.
Even more memorable was the Dupa Making Workshop, which happened to fall on the day of my birthday. The experience began with selecting three fragrance profiles that best reflected our personalities before being guided through the traditional process of creating our own incense. The team patiently walked us through every step, making the activity enjoyable even for complete beginners.
By the end of these workshops, we had not only created something with our own hands but also gained a deeper appreciation for an important part of Balinese daily life.
5. A wellness haven to recharge the mind and body

Wellness is another integral part of the Hiliwatu experience, and nowhere is this more evident than at Samya Spa, where treatments are inspired by the natural elements of stone and water. Much like the rest of the resort, every detail encourages guests to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves.
Our experience began long before the massage itself. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a refreshing herbal drink and a cool towel. We were then invited to choose our preferred massage oil, and I naturally gravitated towards the energising blend, which perfectly suited the rest of our schedule ahead.
Following a brief consultation to understand our preferred massage pressure and any areas requiring extra attention, the therapists began with a traditional foot cleansing ritual before moving into a wonderfully soothing 60-minute Balinese massage. By the end of the treatment, every trace of fatigue from our travels had quietly melted away.
For guests seeking additional wellness experiences, the resort also offers various activities such as guided morning yoga sessions and supervised nature walks through the lush grounds, where you’ll discover herbs traditionally used in Balinese jamu rituals.
6. Capturing beautiful memories to take home

A complimentary 30-minute professional photoshoot is another thoughtful offering at Hiliwatu. Our photographer not only made us feel at ease, but he also patiently guided us through poses while helping us make the most of the resort’s picturesque surroundings. His friendly approach made the session feel natural rather than staged, resulting in photos we genuinely loved.
Guests may choose to purchase additional digital photographs, but Hiliwatu also provides one printed complimentary photograph, a meaningful keepsake that now reminds us of our wonderful time in Ubud.
7. Hospitality that stayed with us long after check-out
Beautiful villas and breathtaking scenery may first attract guests to Hiliwatu, but it is the people who ultimately make the experience unforgettable.
Throughout our stay, every member of the team consistently showed genuine warmth and attentiveness. Whether welcoming us upon arrival, serving us during our dining experiences, guiding us through the workshops, or simply checking in to ensure everything was going well, everyone made us feel sincerely cared for.
We especially appreciated how the team remembered my birthday throughout our stay. From the handwritten greeting waiting inside our villa upon arrival to the surprise birthday cheesecake presented during lunch on our final day, each thoughtful gesture transformed an already luxurious stay into one that felt deeply personal.
Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking to experience a quieter side of Bali, Hiliwatu Bali Ubud offers more than just a place to stay. It is a serene sanctuary where meaningful experiences, heartfelt hospitality, and the beauty of nature come together to create memories that linger long after you’ve returned home.
