Is Thailand family-friendly? Absolutely! We’ve noticed this question pop up online quite often. As parents who’ve explored Thailand ourselves, we can confidently say yes! Thailand is brimming with amazing attractions, delicious food, and convenient transport options, making it a great destination for families. You’ll also find plenty of tour packages specifically designed for family travelers.

What’s more, Thailand’s dedication to family-friendly tourism shines through its accommodations. Many resorts and hotels feature amenities like kids’ clubs, swimming pools, and activities designed to keep young ones entertained.

With that in mind, we’re excited to share what we’ve learned about Thailand’s destinations, transportation, hotels, and more in this travel guide. Let’s dive in!

Best time to visit

Honestly, the “best time” to visit Thailand depends on what you’re looking for. But to make it easier for you, we’ve put together what we know and what we’ve discovered along the way.

Thailand has three main seasons—cool (November to February), hot (March to May), and wet (May to October)—and each one has something unique to offer. The cool season is the favourite, thanks to its comfy temperatures and lower humidity. The hot season, though, can be pretty intense, especially up north, where it often hits around 40°C. The rainy season peaks in July and August, so if you’re not a fan of showers, it might not be the best time. But on the bright side, it’s perfect for scoring hotel deals and travel perks, especially in places like Phuket and Krabi.

If you ask us, the best time to visit is between November and February, when it’s cooler and drier, with temps ranging from 29°C to 34°C. It’s a great time to explore most of the country, especially the west coast, where the calm seas are perfect for snorkeling and diving. If you’re heading to the Gulf of Thailand on the eastern side, aim for April to September—that’s when the weather tends to be better.

Visa and other requirements

If you’re from a country on Thailand’s Visa Exemption List, good news—you can visit without a visa for tourism and stay for up to 30 days. Not sure if your country is eligible? You can check here to find out. For those needing more time, a 30-day extension is available at local immigration offices in Thailand.

For longer stays or non-tourism purposes, there are other visa options, like the 60-day Tourist Visa, Thailand LTR Visa, Thai Elite Visa, or various non-immigrant visas. These are issued by Thai Embassies or Consulates around the world. It’s a good idea to give the nearest Thai Embassy a call to figure out the best option for your plans.

Getting around Thailand

What we love about Thailand is its blend of efficient transport options, making it an excellent destination for families. Whether you’re exploring bustling cities or the scenic countryside, you’ll find plenty of ways to travel comfortably with kids. Here’s what we know about getting around Thailand:

Long-Distance Travel

If you’re travelling between cities or provinces, you’ll have several options to choose from:

Sleeper Trains and Buses

Thailand’s long-distance trains and buses are well-established and reliable. Sleeper buses can be an adventurous option for families, but keep in mind that road conditions at night aren’t always the safest.

For a more classic family experience, opt for an overnight sleeper train. Second-class carriages are particularly family-friendly, offering bunk beds across the aisle and a safe environment for kids. While there’s a rule that children under 12 should sleep on the lower bunk, it’s not always strictly enforced.

Low-Cost Airlines

Thailand’s budget airlines also connect major cities and popular destinations, including convenient flights to spots like Koh Samui. It’s a quick and hassle-free way to cover long distances.

City and Short-Distance Travel

When it comes to getting around within cities or towns, there are plenty of convenient options:

Bus & Metro

Cities like Bangkok have efficient bus and metro networks, making public transportation a great choice for families.

Taxis and Ridesharing

Grab taxis (similar to Uber) are a top choice for families, as they remove the hassle of fare negotiations or language barriers. While some regular taxis use meters, it’s not guaranteed, so installing the Grab app before your trip is a smart move.

Another option to consider is the Bolt app, which often offers cheaper fares than Grab. Both apps also have motorbike taxi options, especially handy in Bangkok to zip through traffic. However, motorbike taxis might not be ideal if you’re traveling with younger kids.

Car Rentals and Private Vehicles

Private tours with drivers or transport services offering child seats can also be pre-booked for added convenience and safety!

Here are a few more tips that could come in handy:

Tickets and Booking

Bus, train, and ferry tickets are easy to find and can usually be bought as you go. However, for sleeper trains (like those from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Surat Thani), it’s a good idea to book in advance to secure a berth.

Airports

If you’re flying into Thailand, we think it’s best to choose a flight that arrives at one of Bangkok’s two major airports, as both offer excellent connectivity for domestic and international flights.

Travel Agencies

If you’re traveling in a group, or just prefer some extra convenience, consider using one of the traditional travel agencies found in tourist hotspots. They can help with everything from booking tickets to arranging local tours and transfers, making your planning a lot easier. It’s especially useful for larger groups.

Bangkok is one of those places that feels like a must when visiting Thailand. 3. Phuket

A favourite escape for those living in Bangkok, Hua Hin is a charming beach town. The nearby night markets are a fun way to sample local food and pick up souvenirs. 9. Kanchanaburi

With its old-world Buenos Aires glamour and impeccable drinks menu, it is a standout. We had an unforgettable evening here—Philip, the beverage manager, went above and beyond with personalised service and even surprised us with complimentary champagne cocktails. Add in engaging conversation with bartender Kiattisak and the chic ambience, and it was easily one of the most memorable parts of our stay.

Of course, kids also has something in store for them. Ours especially enjoyed their time at the pool area, which was perfect amidst Bangkok’s heat.  The thoughtfully and beautifully designed space includes shallow wading zones ideal for toddlers, while older kids can roam freely through a network of interconnected pools, splashing and playing to their hearts’ content. Our little ones had such a great time that convincing them to get out for their afternoon nap became a mission in itself! For indoor fun, the dedicated Kids Club is a beautifully decorated haven of creativity and play. Ally was completely absorbed in a beading activity, while Aaron had the time of his life zipping toy buses and cars around and tackling the slides with boundless energy. It’s a thoughtful, joy-filled space where kids are engaged, safe, and smiling from ear to ear.

2. Sukhumvit Park, Bangkok – Marriott Executive Apartments

Family fun in the heart of the city 

As a family that travels frequently, we truly appreciated how Sukhumvit Park, Bangkok – Marriott Executive Apartments goes above and beyond to accommodate all types of travellers. With personalised packages tailored to different needs and travel styles, the property stands out for its exceptional family-friendly amenities that make every stay feel effortless. For accommodations, the bunk bed setup in both the Bunk Bed Studio and Family Suite offers a fun and practical option for families. We also recommend their Two-Bedroom Apartment if you want to have a bit more space for everyone.

One of the biggest highlights of our visit was the Kids’ Club—an inviting, activity-filled space that quickly became a favourite for our children. And it was not just our kids who had fun—there was an air hockey machine (unheard of in most hotels we have been before!) that we adults could not resist! The club also features toddler-friendly slides and an outdoor playground with swings and bigger slides for more active play. Every Sunday, kids can enjoy a fun, hands-on DIY session from 2–3 PM, where they get to explore their creativity through cooking and crafts, guided by attentive and friendly instructors.

Another family favourite was the kiddie pool, nestled in a serene tropical garden setting where little ones could splash and play freely in a safe, relaxing environment. Mealtimes were just as enjoyable—Bistro M’s breakfast buffet offered something for everyone, from regional delights like Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Thai dishes to Western classics and kid-friendly staples like pancakes and waffles. As for accommodations, the hotel’s spacious serviced apartments were perfect for our family. With fully equipped kitchens, generous living areas, and in-room laundry facilities, we could enjoy the comforts of home while still indulging in the luxurious experience of a five-star hotel. 

3. Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp Resort

If Chiang Rai is on your family’s bucket list, we’d definitely recommend staying at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp Resort. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a dream. The resort is surrounded by a beautiful 160-acre bamboo forest and lush gardens, with views that stretch across the borders of Myanmar and Laos—breathtaking doesn’t even begin to cover it!

Of course, bonding with elephants is a must when you’re in Thailand, especially with kids. And luckily, you can do just that here! At the caretaker village, you’ll get the chance to connect with these gentle giants in a way that’s both touching and special. There’s also the option to zip through the countryside in a vintage sidecar, explore ancient temple ruins hidden in the jungle, or float along the misty Mekong River. Chiang Mai (3 Days)

Day 1: Doi Inthanon National Park

Kick off your Chiang Mai trip by diving into nature. Head to Doi Inthanon National Park, located at Thailand’s highest peak. You’ll find beautiful waterfalls, scenic trails, and breathtaking views that are perfect for a nature escape.
