Future-proofing Your Family with Cord Blood Banking
When you’re expecting a baby, most of your planning revolves around what you can see. The nursery corner, the tiny clothes folded neatly into drawers. The stroller you test over and over in the store, just to be sure. These are the tangible, joyful parts of preparing for a new arrival.
But alongside the visible preparations are quieter decisions—ones that don’t come with photos or Pinterest boards. Decisions about the future you can’t quite imagine yet, but still want to be ready for. One of these is cord blood banking, a choice that’s less about immediate needs and more about future preparedness, made possible by modern medical advances.
Cord Blood Banking
Cord blood banking is the process of collecting and storing the blood found in a baby’s umbilical cord after birth. Cord blood contains a rich source of Haematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) and makes up the building blocks in our blood & immune system throughout our lives. For many families, cord blood banking is a future-focused decision. Cord Blood Stem Cells have been used around the world for the treatment of certain blood disorders, immune conditions, and cancers*. In addition, ongoing clinical trials are investigating its use in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation as well as its potential role in emerging regenerative medicine therapies.

Parents often describe cord blood banking as a “just in case” choice, similar to insurance or long-term health planning. They don’t expect to use it, but they value having the option available. For others, a family history of certain medical conditions may play a role in their decision. And who knows? With how medicine is advancing today, there might be more use for such cells.
Did You Know?
- Cord blood stem cells have been used clinically to treat conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and certain inherited blood disorders*.
- Cord blood collection is painless and poses no risk to either mother or baby.
- Stored cord blood may potentially be used by siblings, depending on medical compatibility.
- You only get one chance to collect cord blood—once the placenta is delivered, it’s no longer possible
The Process
The key thing to know is that: cord blood can only be collected once—at birth. After delivery, once the umbilical cord is cut, the remaining cord blood is usually discarded unless parents have chosen to collect and store it. Cord blood banking preserves these stem cells through cryogenic freezing so they can potentially be used years or even decades later. The stored cells will be a perfect match for the child, and hence can be really useful in the future.
The process is simple and does not affect the birth experience. After the baby is safely delivered and the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut, healthcare professionals collect the remaining blood from the cord. This happens without pain or risk to either mother or baby and does not interfere with early bonding.

The collected cord blood is then sent to a specialised facility, where it is tested, processed, and stored in secure, temperature-controlled conditions. Once stored, it remains preserved unless it is ever needed for medical use by the child or, in some cases, a compatible family member. In Singapore, you can either store your child’s cord blood in a public or private facility, with the latter allowing the use of the cord blood if needed. While there are other private cord blood banks in Singapore, we’ve had our chance to try Stemcord, one of the leading private cord blood banks in Singapore.
StemCord
Founded in March 2002, StemCord is a trusted private cord blood bank focused on the collection and preservation of umbilical cord blood and cord stem cells. Audited and licensed by Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) and accredited by FACT-NetCord to internationally recognised standards, StemCord upholds the stringent levels of safety and quality—giving parents confidence that their baby’s cord blood is in good hands, with services extending beyond Singapore to the Philippines and Indonesia.

The Stemcord Advantage
- Storage in two locations – This guarantees safety like no other. Stemcord chooses to store them in two bags, stored in two separate locations, safeguarding the precious cord blood from fires, natural disasters, or any potential danger. Additionally, the storage locations are equipped with environmental monitoring systems and are monitored 24/7, adopting the stringent standards for your child’s cord blood. Dual storage also offers clients the flexibility to use the stem cells more than once, thus maximising the potential for multiple treatments.
- Increased stem yield through StemCord CultureFirst – Many studies have shown that stem cells extracted from frozen and thawed cord blood exhibited poorer cell recoveries, decreased efficiency, and slower growth characteristics. So, by culturing the stem cells first thing upon extraction, studies showed an increase of 8x yield of stem cells prior to storage. Plus, you can be assured that your cord stem cells are available as soon as they are needed.
- Bonus covers – StemCord offers Bonus covers as an added benefit for clients, including Transplant Medicare, providing financial support for medical expenses associated with an autologous stem cell transplant.
- Proven track record – StemCord’s NetCord-FACT accreditation, together with its experienced medical founders and guidance from a panel of medical experts, show its strong credibility and longstanding experience in cord blood banking. These foundations provide families with reassurance and help explain why many parents have chosen to entrust StemCord with preserving their baby’s cord blood.
Ultimately, cord blood banking is a personal choice—one that gives parents the option to preserve stem cells at birth and keep future medical possibilities open. Many families see it as a form of preparation: something they hope they’ll never need, but appreciate having for peace of mind. While there are several cord blood banking providers in Singapore, StemCord is often considered for its established track record, accreditations, and advanced storage practices.
